All Canadian Boaters are now required to carry a Pleasure Craft Operator Card*, commonly known as a boating license. Required by federal law, Canadian boaters require an Operator Card* when operating a motorized boat - regardless of length of boat, engine size or age of operator. Boaters not carrying a Pleasure Craft Operator Card* face a minimum $250 fine. The law applies to all navigable waters in Canada, in all provinces.
The official Transport Canada accredited boat license exam is available online or in-person from BOATsmart!®. Boaters who take the boating license exam online can complete the Transport Canada authorized online boating course and open book exam from home with no supervisor required. You can print a temporary card immediately when you pass the boating license exam and your permanent BOATsmart!® operator card is good for life.
